Dec. 6, 2008: Hart & Stone General Store Opens in Mexico

MEXICO, NY—Hart & Stone, a new 3,800-square foot general store located in the heart of Mexico’s business district, celebrated its grand opening Saturday, Dec. 6.

The store boasts a diverse selection of products made in the United States, Canada and Europe including Salmon Falls Stoneware, Playmobil toys, jewelry, leather, educational toys and games, and general hardware as well as consigned items from local artisans.

Also available is an in-store café featuring Green Mountain Coffee, homemade baked goods and specialty items, John F. Martin meats out of Lancaster, PA, fresh cheese curd and a selection of Colosse cheeses.
Owners Pam and Brian Roach purchased the former Crandall’s Pharmacy building on Main and Jefferson Streets and have renovated and restored it to its original form when it was built in the mid 1880s.

“My husband and I both grew up in Mexico and then left the area after college. When we moved back here, we really wanted to find a way to give back to the community we both love, and we wanted our kids to be proud to be a part of the community as well,” said Pam Roach.

“We have been overwhelmed with the support we have received from the village and its residents in bringing this project to fruition. Everyone has been so welcoming and helpful and we are sincerely grateful for that,” she added.

According to Roach, the name of the store is a combination of the business names of the former owners of the building Norval D. Hart Pharmacy and B.S. Stone & Co.

Hart & Stone employs seven.

“Hart & Stone is a beautiful country store that honors the historical character of the property as well as the Mexico area, while offering its customers a diverse selection of products and unique hand-crafted items,” said L. Michael Treadwell, CEcD, executive director of OOC, a private, non-profit organization working to enhance and protect the economic climate of Oswego County. “We look forward to their continued growth and success in Oswego County.”
