Career Exploration Website Goes “Live”
The Workforce Board of Oswego County (WDB)
recently announced that a new website has been launched to assist
job seekers and students explore career opportunities within Oswego
County.
The site, www.oswegocareerladders.com,
was launched on March 3 and already has received numerous visits.
It features career paths in the four industry clusters that the
WDB identified as being crucial to the economic well-being of the
county – energy, manufacturing, health care and hospitality.
“Career ladders are long-term career
progression pathways that show individuals how to advance in high-wage,
high-growth fields. As a framework for lifelong learning, career
pathways begin with basic skills, integrate education with work,
and propel individuals toward progressively higher levels of skill,
responsibility and wages,” said Nancy Bellow, director of
the WDB.
“Career ladder mapping can be a vital
tool for preparing workers for employment in developing technologies
and through New York State’s Centers of Excellence and Centers
for Advanced Technology,” she added.
John Mosher, human resources manager at Novelis Specialty Products
and chair of the WDB said, “The launching of the Career Ladder
Map website is the culmination of our strategic planning efforts
that started in 2004. Through this site, young people who want to
work and live in the Oswego County can explore some the hundreds
of career options available to them, and gain an understanding of
the education and skills they will need to acquire to get those
jobs.”
Development of the website was funded from
a number of sources including contributions from New York State
Department of Labor, Entergy, Alliance Bank, Pathfinder Bank, Operation
Oswego County and IBEW Local 43.
“Although the site is currently up and running, work continues
to enhance the site. Every week, video clips and job profiles are
added to provide more in-depth information on featured jobs. This
work will continue over the next few months,” Bellow said.
Comments and suggestions can be made through
the website or by contacting the WDB office at 312-3492.
