25, 2006: Oswego County Industrial Parks Critical to Business
Attraction
By L. Michael Treadwell, CEcD, Executive Director, Operation Oswego
County
Because of the many economic development
assets associated with our industrial parks, Oswego County is able
to be competitive when attracting prospective businesses. Some of
those assets include strategic locations near major highways, railroads
and airports, existing infrastructure, economic benefits and incentives,
and diverse parcels and buildings for office, research and development,
light industrial, distribution and manufacturing space.
Operation Oswego County (OOC), a private,
non-profit organization working to enhance economic climate of Oswego
County, operates three industrial parks in Oswego County including
the 182-acre Oswego County Industrial Park (OCIP) off of NYS Route
481 in the town of Schroeppel, the 57-acre Lake Ontario Industrial
Park (LIOP) in the city of Oswego and the 170-acre Airport Industrial
Park in the town of Volney. OOC also works to promote development
of privately owned industrial parks such as the Riverview Business
Park in the town of Volney, the Independence Industrial Park in
the town of Scriba, as well as the Rich Industrial Park in the town
of Hastings. OOC is also involved with the continuing development
of a 100-acre Minetto Canal Park at the former Columbia Mills Brownfield
site in the town of Minetto.
Our industrial parks host a variety of businesses
including Northland Filter in the LOIP, Canfield Machine andTool
in the Airport Industrial Park, and Enders Racing Engines, Discovery
Day Care Center, ORC Plastics, Southern Graphics, Super Coil, Inc.,
SUNY Oswego Institute for Professional and Organizational Development
in the OCIP. OOC also operates a business incubator facility within
the OCIP which houses Fulton Machinery and My Pet Enterprises.
Additionally, Northeast Biofuels will develop
the first ethanol plant in the Northeast at Riverview Business Park.
The plant will occupy nearly a quarter of the 420-acre business
park, which is being developed as an industrial park with a special
focus on renewable energy and agribusiness. The $200 million ethanol
plant will produce 114 million gallons of ethanol per year and is
expected to create 450-500 construction jobs and more than 50 permanent
jobs.
OOC aggressively promotes Oswego County’s
major industrial parks through various national, international and
regional trade publications, by participating in exhibitions and
industry-specific tradeshows, by directly targeting prospects and
by utilizing the Internet.
