March 10, 2006: Small Business Management Series Registration Deadline Approaching

OSWEGO, NY-- The Center for Business and Community Development (CBCD) at SUNY Oswego will host “Growth Through Effective Leadership,” an Allstate Business Management Series beginning Tuesday, March 21. The series will convene weekly, each Tuesday, until April 18. All sessions will be held from 6-9 p.m. in Rich Hall, room 118-A, on the SUNY Oswego campus. Registration deadline for the series is Tuesday, March 14. A registration fee of $250 will be collected prior to the first session.

The series is a collaborative effort between the CBCD and experienced professionals from diverse backgrounds, and is geared toward entrepreneurs who have been in business for at least two years and are interested in growing their business. Session topics will include personal and professional skill building, team building, leadership visioning and practice, ethical leadership and financial and economic literacy.

As part of the series, Fred Thomas, vice president and senior portfolio manager at HSBC Bank and owner of Grace Capital Management, will present a workshop on economic issues for small businesses on April 18 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Thomas has also served as portfolio manager for The Ayco Company, a subsidiary of Goldman Sachs, where his duties included managing over 2,600 clients’ bond portfolios and over 500 clients’ equity portfolios. While working at Abel/Noser Corporation in the eighties, Mr. Thomas was first exposed to what he considered to be overwhelming evidence which supports the investment approach he uses today that melds value investing with growth investing. After spending six years selling this investment philosophy to investment advisors, he became the director of research for Addison Capital Management. During his tenure at Addison Capital Management, Addison Capital Shares, a mutual fund then managed by Addison Capital Management went from being a three-star fund to being a five-star fund.

Other series presenters will include William Hoosty, president of WRH Consulting Group; Peter Connell, training and human resource development consultant; Kelly Sullivan, founder of The Center for System Thinking and Innovation; Marcene Sonneborn, business development and management consultant; Alex Grimshaw, CEO of PPS International; and Larry Perras, small business development advisor with the Small Business Development Center at the CBCD.
