June 3, 2005: Dee Heckethorn Honored
as “Volunteer of the Year”
ALBANY, NY-- The New York
State Economic Development Council (NYSEDC) named Dee C. Heckethorn
its 2005 “Volunteer of the Year.” Heckethorn is a retired
commercial banker from Oswego who serves as a member of the board
of directors for Operation Oswego County (OOC).
The award was presented by NYSEDC at the
group’s annual meeting in Cooperstown in May. NYSEDC is New
York State’s principal organization representing economic
development professionals.
The “Volunteer of the Year” award
is presented to an individual whose leadership and dedication to
community improvement through quality, sustainable economic development
has led to new capital investment, helped create or retain jobs,
and improved the quality of life in the community and the state.
Heckethorn was nominated by OOC in recognition
of his work as an unpaid leader in more than a dozen organizations
in the community. He has served as a volunteer board or committee
member for several organizations that support economic development.
He has been a board member of OOC since 1985, and during that time,
he has served as treasurer, vice president, and president. In these
roles, he helped steer the organization through challenges, including
the closure of several industrial facilities in the county and a
tightening of the county budget.
He has also served as an unpaid board member
for the County of Oswego Industrial
Development Agency (IDA) since 1984 and, since 1999, as vice chairman.
Additionally, he has served on the Workforce Development Board of
Oswego County, the Greater Oswego Chamber of Commerce and the Adirondack
North Country Association, which named Heckethorn its “Member
of the Year” in 1999. He also received the “Community
Leadership Award” from Leadership Oswego County in 1999.
“We were proud to nominate Dee for
this award. He has consistently set an example that is truly a model
for unselfish commitment of volunteerism,” said L. Michael
Treadwell, CEcD, executive director of OOC.
“His vision continues to shape those
organizations he has been so dedicated to throughout his career.”
NYSEDC’s 900 members include the leadership
of the industrial development agencies, local development corporations,
commercial and investment banks, underwriters, bond counsels, utilities,
chambers of commerce and private corporations.
