March 24, 2005: Center for Entrepreneurs
Opens at SUNY Oswego
Submitted by Nancy Bellow, Director,
SUNY Oswego Center for Business and Community Development
Local small businesses and entrepreneurs
have a new resource to provide them assistance following the grand
opening of the Center for Entrepreneurs at the State University
of New York at Oswego. The new center, in conjunction with the School
of Business and the Center for Business and Community Development,
will focus on entrepreneurship education and hands on learning for
students and members of the business community to help create and
maintain jobs in the region.
The completion of the project was made possible
through the support of a $125,000 state grant secured by Senator
Jim Wright (R,C,I-Watertown).
“SUNY Oswego is very pleased that Senator
Wright thought of us for the Center for Entrepreneurs. Our vision
for the Center for Entrepreneurs is to foster the development of
an entrepreneurial community through education, research, technical
assistance, and training that is focused on promoting the entrepreneurial
values of achievement, innovation, calculated risk-taking, and the
proactive pursuit of opportunity,” said SUNY Oswego President
Deborah F. Stanley.
“A large number of jobs throughout
the region are created by entrepreneurs and small business owners
who take a risk by establishing new enterprises. The opening of
the doors at the new center will literally open a new avenue for
these businesses to receive sound business services and advice,"
said Senator Wright. "The expansion of the college's already
established business assistance program offers an environment to
encourage economic growth throughout the region. The establishment
of the new Center builds upon this past success and will benefit
the people and businesses of Oswego County."
The new Center has state of the art technological
capabilities including video conference capabilities, webinars,
teleconferences, multimedia presentations and a computer lab. The
grant provided by Senator Wright was partially utilized to secure
the necessary equipment.
New computers and resource materials have
been obtained for the one-stop business service center. Businesses
will be able to use the Center to develop plans and complete Internet
based market research. A resource library provides access to workforce
development and economic development services. Those utilizing the
center will be able to access a network of qualified service providers
and research solutions to assist with financial and management issues
and regulatory compliance.
Students participating in entrepreneur related
classes will have a curriculum focused on the practical matters
of general business initiatives such as preplanning, credit assessment
and remediation, personal financial assessment and an overview of
business planning including market research; promotions; financial,
legal and insurance considerations.
Businesses and entrepreneurs who would like
to contact the new Center can call the Center for Business and Community
Development at 312-3492 or can visit the website at www.oswego.edu/cbcd/.
