Oct. 20, 2004: Rebecca Ryan to
Headline Public Issues Forum October 28
OSWEGO, NY--The Workforce
Development Board of Oswego County, Operation Oswego County and
SUNY Oswego will co-host a public issues forum titled “What’s
Cool About Oswego County: Economic and Workforce Issues Today and
Tomorrow.”
The forum will be held in the Forum Restaurant,
Hewitt Union on the SUNY Oswego campus, Thursday, Oct. 28 from 7:45
a.m. to 10 a.m. There is no registration fee, but reservations are
required.
Featured speaker Rebecca Ryan, president
of Next Generation Consulting, Inc. (NGC), will discuss the findings
of a recent study conducted to determine what Oswego County can
do to attract and retain young professional employees. Over the
past few months, NGC conducted a series of focus groups and interviews
with young professionals 23 to 43 years old to gauge their ideas
on what makes Oswego County competitive. During the forum, Ryan
will present the resulting “handprint” of Oswego County,
which profiles how the area scored in the seven indexes that are
considered important to young professionals: vitality, earning,
learning, social capital, cost of lifestyle, after hours, and around
town.
According to Ryan, “through in-depth
research and discovery, we uncover the ‘best of what is’
in companies and communities. Then we democratize the information,
making it available through multiple channels for companies and
communities of all sizes.”
The forum is part of a strategic planning
initiative that the WDB began in February 2004 with an economic
and workforce summit featuring Ed Barlow, a nationally known futurist.
A series of follow-up meetings helped the WDB to identify key industry
clusters for future growth in the county, as well as the human resource
challenges for these industries. This information has been summarized
in a state of the workforce report, which was recently completed.
The strategic planning initiative will culminate with the publication
of a five-year strategic plan expected this winter.
To make a reservation, or for more information
about the forum, call SUNY Oswego’s Center for Business and
Community Development at 315-312-3492.
