Oct. 13, 2004: Business Exporting Seminars to be Held in November

“Exporting Goods to Mexico” is the topic of a series of seminars sponsored by SUNY Oswego’s Center for Business and Community Development and School of Business, the Oswego County Workforce Development Board, Operation Oswego County and Niagara Mohawk, a National Grid company.

The seminars are designed to help local businesses in Oswego, Jefferson and Cayuga counties initiate or increase trade with Mexico and will feature Robert Trachtenberg of ExportNY, a program designed to help companies grow in the global marketplace. Trachtenberg will discuss the reasons companies should export, ways in which ExportNY can assist, marketing-related topics and government programs available.

Also featured will be a question and answer forum with businesses already exporting to Mexico.

The seminar schedule is as follows:

  • Jefferson County-- Monday, Nov. 1, 8:30 a.m. to noon, Ramada Inn Renaissance, room B, 600 Arsenal Street in Watertown;
  • Oswego County-- Friday, Nov. 5, 8:30 a.m. to noon, The Captain's Steak and Seafood Restaurant, 27 East First Street in Oswego; and
  • Cayuga County-- Wednesday, Nov. 10, 8:30 a.m. to noon, James Walsh Regional Economic Center, room 207, 197 Franklin Street in Auburn.

“By the end of the series, business owners should come away with better knowledge of specific aspects of exporting including which sectors are most conducive to export, what assistance is available through government agencies, information about ExportNY and more information about the safeguards in place to insure payment for goods,” said Nancy Bellow, director of SUNY Oswego’s Center for Business and Community Development (CBCD).

A one-time, follow-up seminar will held in Oswego, Nov. 12, 8:30 a.m. to noon for attendees who would like more in-depth information on issues related to exporting. Featured presenters will include Rosanna Masucci of the U.S. Commerce Department to discuss commerce department assistance and trade delegations and contacts; Tom Cumming of EXIM Bank to discuss payment issues and insurance; and Mike Allocca of Team Worldwide to discuss freight considerations and customs issues.

The CBCD enhances and promotes sustainable economic vitality through job creation and training, economic growth, and community development. Programs and services provided through the CBCD include the Small Business Development Center, the Workforce Development Board, entrepreneurial training and public issues forums. SUNY Oswego’s School of Business received a grant from the U.S. Department of Education for funding of a program to expand the school’s international curriculum. The “Exporting Goods to Mexico” seminar is part of this initiative.

Operation Oswego County is a private, non-profit organization working to enhance and protect the economic climate of Oswego County. Since 1953, the agency has delivered $2.4 billion in investments and created or retained more than 15,000 jobs.
