June 29, 2004: Oswego County Marketed
at Bio Technology Conference
As part of a joint regional initiative to
market the Central New York area to the biotechnology industry,
Operation Oswego County (OOC) recently attended the Biotechnology
Industry Organization's (BIO's) annual convention held recently
in San Francisco.
The initiative was organized and sponsored
by Empire State Development and Niagara Mohawk and in addition to
OOC, featured the Greater Syracuse Economic Growth Council, Madison
County IDA, Onondaga County IDA and the Syracuse IDA. The New York
State pavilion also included representatives from Buffalo Niagara
Enterprise, Greater Rochester Enterprise, Hudson Valley, Long Island
and New York City.
The BIO annual convention is the largest
gathering of biotechnology leaders in the world and attracted more
than 17,000 attendees, and featured more than 900 speakers, 1,400
exhibitors and more than 190 training sessions on such topics as
business development, drug development, and manufacturing and regulatory
issues.
BIO represents more than 1,000 biotechnology
companies, academic institutions, state biotechnology centers and
related organizations in the United States and 33 other nations.
BIO members are involved in the research and development of health-care,
agricultural, industrial and environmental biotechnology products.
- According to the U.S. Department of Commerce:
- There are 1,457 biotechnology companies
in the United States;
- Biotechnology companies have seen revenues
increase from $8 billion in 1992 to $34.8 billion in 2001;
- The U.S. biotechnology industry employs
over 191,000 people; and
- Biotechnology is one of the most research-intensive
industries in the world, spending over $15.7 billion on research
and development in the United States in 2001.
“The convention was an excellent opportunity
to promote Oswego County’s economic resources to a captive
audience of thousands of bio technology industry executives, investors,
policymakers and scientists from more than 55 countries that may
possibly be outgrowing their current manufacturing facilities or
are finding it necessary to expand into new regions to better serve
their markets,” said L. Michael Treadwell, CEcD, executive
director of OOC.
Funding for OOC’s joint participation
with the Central New York group was provided by the Oswego County
Legislature’s Economic Development Initiative Fund.
